Marks Cove Conservation Area

A Place Where Land, Sea, and Stewardship Come Together

The Marks Cove Conservation Area protects 118 acres of coastal forest, salt marsh, and tidal flats along the shores of Buzzards Bay. This ecologically rich landscape provides habitat for a wide variety of wildlife, acts as a natural buffer against storms and sea level rise, and offers quiet, scenic trails for public enjoyment.

Located in the Great Neck region of Wareham, this conservation area is the result of a strong partnership between the Wareham Land Trust, the Buzzards Bay Coalition, the Town of Wareham, and the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation. Together, these partners have ensured the permanent protection of one of the region’s most valuable coastal habitats.

Why This Place Matters

Marks Cove is a thriving example of coastal biodiversity. The salt marshes, upland woods, and intertidal zones provide important feeding and nesting grounds for migratory birds, shellfish, and other wildlife. The vegetation helps filter runoff, reduce erosion, and store carbon, contributing to both ecological health and climate resilience.

In addition to its natural benefits, Marks Cove is cherished by local residents and visitors as a peaceful place to walk, observe nature, and connect with the land and water.

Restoration and Stewardship

Years of dedicated care have gone into restoring this landscape. Invasive plants have been removed, native vegetation reestablished, and trail access improved. These efforts continue through volunteer support and regular monitoring by the Wareham Land Trust and its partners. Stewardship work is focused on enhancing habitat quality and protecting the long-term health of the ecosystem.

Explore the Trails

Visitors can enjoy well-marked trails that pass through coastal forest, skirt the edges of the salt marsh, and provide occasional views of Buzzards Bay. The area is ideal for walking, birdwatching, quiet reflection, and seasonal wildlife observation.

Trails are mostly level but may be muddy or uneven depending on the season. Please stay on designated paths and avoid sensitive areas.
