Great Neck Conservation Area

Great Neck Conservation Area

A Coastal Refuge Rich in History and Habitat

Located on a scenic peninsula reaching into Buzzards Bay, the Great Neck Conservation Area is one of Wareham’s most ecologically and culturally significant landscapes. This expansive area features forested trails, salt marshes, and shoreline, providing a peaceful escape into nature and protecting one of the last large coastal forests in southeastern Massachusetts.

Why Great Neck Matters

Great Neck is a biodiversity stronghold. Its mix of coastal forest, freshwater wetlands, and tidal estuaries provides essential habitat for wildlife such as osprey, box turtles, migratory songbirds, and shellfish. The land also plays a critical role in safeguarding water quality in Buzzards Bay by filtering runoff and stabilizing vulnerable shorelines.

In addition to its ecological value, Great Neck holds deep historical significance. The area reflects generations of land use, from Wampanoag stewardship to colonial farming, and now, modern conservation efforts that protect its beauty and ecological function.

Explore the Trails

With several miles of marked trails, the Great Neck Conservation Area is ideal for:
