Douglas S. Westgate & Fearing Hill Conservation Areas

Douglas S. Westgate and Fearing Hill Conservation Areas

A Riverfront Refuge of Forest, Wetlands, and Cranberry History

Together, the Douglas S. Westgate and Fearing Hill Conservation Areas form one of Wareham’s most diverse and expansive natural landscapes. These two adjacent, town-owned properties protect 114 acres of uplands, wetlands, and former cranberry bogs along the scenic Weweantic River. Managed in partnership with the Wareham Land Trust, the area offers a peaceful retreat into nature with opportunities for walking, wildlife observation, and exploring local history.

Land and Water Worth Protecting

This conservation corridor supports a wide range of habitats, from riverbank woodlands and vernal pools to abandoned bogs that are slowly transitioning back to natural wetland systems. The Weweantic River, one of Wareham’s most important waterways, provides essential habitat for herring and other native fish species, while the surrounding forest helps to protect water quality and biodiversity.

The former cranberry bogs serve as a living reminder of Wareham’s agricultural legacy and offer a unique chance to observe how nature reclaims cultivated land over time.

Trail Experience

Visitors can explore a well-loved network of trails that travel through a rich mosaic of landscapes:

  • Riverfront paths with occasional glimpses of the Weweantic

  • Opportunities to see birds, turtles, amphibians, and seasonal wildflowers
