Agawam River Pine Barrens

Agawam River Pine Barrens

A Rare Ecosystem in the Heart of Wareham

Tucked between the Weweantic and Agawam Rivers lies a quiet, forested landscape unlike any other in Wareham: the Agawam River Pine Barrens. This 68-acre conservation area protects one of the last remaining coastal pine barrens habitats in southeastern Massachusetts—an increasingly rare and ecologically significant ecosystem.

Why This Land Matters

Coastal pine barrens are globally uncommon. Defined by their dry, sandy soils and dominated by pitch pine and scrub oak, these landscapes are shaped by fire and home to unique species found nowhere else. The Agawam River Pine Barrens provide critical habitat for box turtles, migratory birds, and diverse pollinators. The land also protects clean water by buffering the Agawam River, which flows into Buzzards Bay and supports vital shellfish beds and fisheries.

Conservation in Action

This land was permanently protected through a collaborative effort led by the Wareham Land Trust and its conservation partners. Today, WLT stewards the land to enhance habitat quality, manage invasive species, and monitor ecological health. Public access is a key part of this work—balancing human connection with environmental care.

Explore the Pine Barrens

Visitors can enjoy peaceful walks through open woodland, past vernal pools, and down to the river’s edge. It’s an ideal place for hiking, birdwatching, quiet reflection, and seasonal fishing or kayaking along the Agawam River.

Please note:

  • Access is limited due to road conditions. The unimproved dirt road can be sandy, muddy, or icy depending on the season. Vegetation may encroach on the narrow road past the gas line right-of-way.

  • The road is currently gated. Vehicular access is restricted and only available for special events.

  • For hiking, please park along Glen Charlie Road and walk in on foot.

Directions

From the intersection of Cranberry Highway (Route 28) and Glen Charlie Road, proceed north on Glen Charlie Road for 2 miles to the entrance of Maple Park Campground. Turn into the campground and drive 0.3 miles, turning right just after the bridge. Follow the dirt road for approximately 1.25 miles to reach the Natural Gas Line Right of Way, which marks the beginning of the Agawam River Pine Barrens Preserve.
