Native Land Conservancy
Saturday, September 12th, 10:00 a.m. St. Patrick’s Hall, High Street
We are thrilled to be hosting a program to introduce our community to new members of our region’s land conservation team and to learn more about the Native American experience in New England. The Native Land Conservancy of Mashpee, MA was formed in 2012 as the *first* Native-run land conservation group east of the Mississippi. In June of this year, the NLC received its first donation of a 1.4-acre parcel of land in Centerville MA.
The Wampanoag Tribe’s roots on Cape Cod date back some 12,000 years. Roberta Peters, Vice-President of the NLC, was recently quoted in the Barnstable Patriot about the tribe’s history: “The tribe has always been in the opposite position: of giving away or losing its rightful land. It hasn’t been the reverse until now.”
Refreshments will be served. A $2 donation is requested by non-members for this event to help cover the hall cost. A better idea: become a member when you come to the program!
