All outdoor users: Wear blaze orange during hunting seasons
As the leaves turn and the air gets crisp, it’s not just hikers and dog walkers enjoying the trails. It’s also hunting season in much of Massachusetts. On Wareham Land Trust properties, hunting is permitted on parcels where “No Hunting” signs are not posted, so it’s always smart to know where you are and take a few simple precautions to stay visible and comfortable outdoors.
One of the easiest ways to do that is by wearing blaze orange through the end of the year. A bright vest, hat, or even an orange bandana for your dog helps you stand out in the woods and ensures that hunters can easily see you. You don’t have to wear a full neon outfit to make a difference. Just a pop of orange goes a long way and looks great against the fall colors.
It’s also worth remembering that hunters and conservationists share a lot of common ground. Many hunters are deeply connected to the land and notice its subtle changes from season to season. They contribute to conservation through license fees and habitat programs, and often act as extra eyes and ears out in nature. Hunters, hikers, birders, and families enjoying the trails alike all value healthy forests, thriving wildlife, and open spaces. We’re all part of the same community working to protect these special places.
If you ever feel uneasy about being out during hunting season, Sundays are always a safe bet. Massachusetts law prohibits hunting on Sundays, so you can plan your walk or hike for then and enjoy the quiet, knowing the woods are all yours for the day.
Whether you’re hiking, birdwatching, or simply soaking in the beauty of autumn, wearing blaze orange is a simple way to share the outdoors safely and respectfully. The woods belong to everyone who loves them. Let’s keep exploring together, bright, visible, and appreciative of our surroundings.
