Programs

The Wareham Land Trust programs can be divided into three main focus areas: Land Acquisition, Stewardship and Outreach.

Land Acquisition

In the short time since its inception, the Wareham Land Trust has conserved over 690 acres of open space though land acquisition and conservation restrictions – protecting wildlife habitat, safeguarding wetland and estuary ecosystems, preserving scenic vistas, and providing natural areas for passive recreation. We often rely on a combination of fundraising within our membership and in the community, grants and partnerships with other local conservation organizations to successfully complete land acquisition projects. Stewardship

With over 690 acres of open space conserved though land acquisition and conservation restrictions, the Wareham Land Trust is tasked with responsibly managing and stewarding those lands. In all cases, we manage our properties to ensure the conservation values of the land are protected. This involves annual monitoring, policing abutter encroachments, and in some cases, actively managing habitat conditions (e.g., invasive species removal). For many properties, stewardship also involves promoting and maintaining public access, through creation and upkeep of trail systems, development and posting of maps and signs, and installation of minor infrastructure (e.g., benches, stream bridges, trail kiosks, etc.). Most of this work is supported by volunteer efforts and funded by grants. Click here to learn about our current stewardship initiatives and how you can help.

Outreach

The Wareham Land Trust endeavors to keep the community apprised of conservation issues and threats to the local environment. To that end, we aim to hold frequent public events and talks throughout the year to educate young and old about the importance of conserving land and encouraging active appreciation of our town’s natural resources. Our diverse programming features everything from bi-monthly trail days, naturalist walks and library talks to dog hikes, kayak trips and nature journal workshops. We believe that building the environmental awareness of the community has impacts on nature from cleaner air and water to species protection. Many programs are held outdoors on properties we own or steward – getting folks outside with nature right in town. Interactive programs and talks are also occasionally held indoors.
