Know Your Nature Program Series (Mar-Jun)

Humans play a great role in nature but in today’s world there are many who believe it is something separate and foreign. The goal of this series is to highlight our connection with the natural world and the many ways we can foster relationships with it. Join the Wareham Land Trust this spring to explore how you can better know your nature!

March 22nd – Winter Tree ID Walk at the Red Brook Trail Network

Join arborist Chance Perks for a guided walk through the unique pine barrens habitat and ubiquitous pine forests found on the Red Brook Trail Network. You will learn several tips to identify trees in the winter as well as the natural history of these ecosystems. Be sure to dress for the weather and wear sturdy walking shoes. This program is FREE for WLT members, $5 for non-members (payment via cash or check at the event). Registration is required.

April 10th – Nature Journaling 101 at the Wareham Free Library

Have you ever heard of Nature Journaling? Have you thought about keeping one but didn’t know where to start? Wareham Land Trust’s own executive director Elise Leduc-Fleming will discuss several techniques and ideas to explore this journaling practice at the Wareham Free Library. This program is FREE to all but registration is requested.

April 22nd – Citizen Science Talk at the Wareham Free Library

Did you know scientists often rely on data collected by volunteers from the public for their studies? There are many ways to become involved with important research on both a local and global scale. Join Wareham Land Trust’s TerraCorps Service Member, Julia Ledo, at Wareham Free Library for an informational presentation on citizen science projects you can participate in easily from your phone in your own backyard and beyond. This program is FREE to all but registration is requested.

April 30th – Birds of Great Neck with Mass Audubon at Great Neck Wildlife Sanctuary

Join the Wareham Land Trust and Mass Audubon for Great Walks at Great Neck.

Spring brings the return of Osprey and herons as they prepare for nesting season. Join staff from Wareham Land Trust and Mass Audubon as we explore this 200+ acre sanctuary that hosts a variety of native plants and wildlife and discuss the natural history of these magnificent birds and observe their courtship and nesting behaviors. Learn about efforts to mitigate the effects of climate change on their long-term survival. Be prepared for possible damp and uneven terrain. Severe weather cancels.  Bring binoculars if you have them and wear sturdy walking shoes. This program is FREE but registration is required and space is limited.

May 18th – Foraging with Rachel G at Douglas S. Westgate

Join forager, certified educator, and state-certified mushroomer Rachel Goclawski for a walk through Douglas S. Westgate to learn how to identify edible and/or medicinal trees, plants, and mushrooms. There will also be discussion on harvesting, preparation, and preservation methods as well as sustainable foraging practices. This program is FREE for WLT members, $5 for non-members (payment via cash or check at the event) and registration is required.

May 24th – Plein Air Drawing at Marks Cove Conservation Area

Join art enthusiast Julia Ledo for an outdoor drawing session at beautiful Marks Cove Conservation Area. There will be a short demo to spark inspiration before artists work on their own pieces. Artists of all skill levels are welcome. You are welcome to bring your own supplies but colored pencils will be available for use and sketchbooks will be provided. Please bring essentials like water, sunscreen, and bug spray as well as your own small blanket, towel, or portable chair to sit if you are not comfortable on the ground. This program is FREE for WLT members, $5 for non-members (payment via cash or check at the event) and registration is required as space is limited.

June 5th – Nature Journaling at Agawam River Trail

Join Wareham Land Trust’s Executive Director for an outdoor nature journal session and complete an entry in your nature journal at the beautiful Agawam River Trail. June 21st – Firefly Walk at Douglas S. Westgate

Plymouth County entomologist Blake Dinius will lead an evening walk at Douglas S. Westgate Preserve to explore the fascinating world of fireflies. With firefly activity at its peak this time of year, this is a program not to be missed. This program is FREE for WLT members, $5 for non-members (payment via cash or check at the event) and registration is required.

June 30th – Butterfly Walk at Great Neck Wildlife Sanctuary

Are you fascinated with butterflies but don’t know how to start identifying them? Here’s your chance! Butterfly enthusiasts Andy and Lauren Griffith will lead a butterfly walk at Great Neck Wildlife Sanctuary. This program is FREE to all, but registration is required.
