dsc_1144_optThe Wareham Land Trust and the Buzzards Bay Coalition is excited to partner again with the Wareham Public School’s after school CARE program in the fall of 2016. Facilitated by Ben Hyland, Youth Education Coordinator, the goal of these programs is to encourage outdoor exploration, to create a connection between the students and their local ecosystems, and to create a feeling of empowerment to act as a steward for this resource.
The following gives a brief description of lessons and programming with the Science Explorers Program at the Wareham Public Schools. The overall theme of this series is the outdoor exploration of schoolyard ecology.
Decas Elementary School:
– Mondays October 17th, October 24th, and November 7th
– Grades K-2nd
– These three, one hour long events will focus on habitats near the schoolyard. We explore the forest habitats and also discover the food webs that exist in these habitats
– The students will discover how the non-living and living factors in an ecosystem interact to create different habitats for different animals
Minot Forest Elementary School:
– Tuesdays October 25th, November 15th, and November 22nd
– Grades 3rd-5th
– These three, one hour long events will focus on the parts of an ecosystem. The students will use different senses to discover different parts of the ecosystem they would have normally missed. We will also work together to create our own habitat homes in the school yard.
– The students will discover how the non-living and living factors in an ecosystem interact to create different habitats for different animals
Wareham Middle School:
– Wednesdays October 19th, October 26th, and November 2nd
– Grades 6th-8th
– These three, one hour events will focus on the specific ecosystems around the Middle School. We will explore the forest, a pond, and a marsh. The students will be learning how to collect data and interpret the information they discover.
– The students will discover the interconnectedness of the ecosystems we will visit and gain strategies for exploring and learning there.
